Bear’s Den Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Does Bears Den have bathroom facilities?
A. All of Bears Den’s indoor bathroom facilities are for lodge guests only. There are 3 Privies, (Outhouses) throughout the property. 2 in campground and 1 on the lawn with the fenced in garden on it.
Q. Who is Bears Den owned by?
A. Bears Den is owned by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The lodge is run by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club.
Q. Why is it called Bears Den?
A. No one really knows. The property used to be owned by Mr. and Mrs Lawson. Guests of theirs told us that they had a lot of Bears Skin Rugs on the walls and floors.
Q. What exactly is Bears Den?
A. Bears Den is a Lodge and Hostel for all travelers. We especially cater to the hiker on the Appalachian Trail since it is in our back yard.
Q. How far is Bears Den from the Overlook?
A. Roughly 200 yards.
Q. Is Bears Den Pet Friendly?
A. The grounds are pet friendly. We only ask that you keep your animal on a leash at all times.
Q. Does Bears Den have a campground?
A. We have a campground that consists of 5 individual sites. They are by reservation only. To make a reservation either phone to 540-554-8708 or go to info@bearsdencenter.org.
Q. Is Parking Free?
A. No. Day use parking is $3.00 per day.
Q. Why do you charge for parking?
A. To maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the property it takes money. Not to mention the annual maintenance of the road and culvert off of Rte. 601.
Q. Do you have availability for RV’s?
A. Our campground is a primitive style campground. This meaning only tents. We have no electricity in campground nor running water. There is running water up the hill at the lodge.
Q. Do you accept donations?
A. We always love and appreciate donations. Bears Den is a non profit operations so donations of any kind really go a long way in the overall successful running of the operation. To make a donation you can either just put a little extra money in the pay pole, go to our Amazon.com Wish listt, or go to our Paypal account.
Q. What forms of payment to you accept?
A. We accept cash, Mastercard, Visa and Discover.
Q. Do you have food for Hikers?
A. We do. We offer a basic resupply: Ramen noodles, Crackers, Energy Bars, Potatoes, Pasta Sides, Candy Bars, etc. We also offer, after 5pm, frozen pizza and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.
